Ferrets are affectionate, playful, and endlessly entertaining companions, but they need several hours of supervised play each day, a carefully ferret-proofed home, and an exotic-savvy vet. They are wonderful pets for committed owners, not low-effort starter animals.
Hello, Tammy here. Over the years of making memorial pieces for all kinds of small companions, I have heard so many ferret stories from customers that I have developed a real soft spot for these little "carpet sharks". If you are wondering whether a ferret might suit your home, here is what I have learned from ferret people themselves, plus a little honest research.
What is it like to live with a ferret?
Ferret owners describe life with them as living with a tiny, mischievous toddler who naps like a cat. Ferrets sleep 14 to 18 hours a day, but when they are awake they are fully awake: bouncing sideways in the famous "weasel war dance", stealing socks and keys to stash in hidden hoards, and squeezing into gaps you did not know existed. They are social, curious, and surprisingly cuddly once they trust you. Many do best in pairs, because a lone ferret can get bored and lonely while you are out.
Are ferrets good pets for beginners?
They can be, if you do your homework first. Ferrets are not difficult in the way a horse is difficult, but they are demanding in specific ways:
- Daily free-roam time. A cage is only for sleeping and safety. Ferrets need at least 3 to 4 hours out of the cage every day, supervised.
- Ferret-proofing. Block every gap larger than a few centimetres, secure recliners and washing machines, and keep rubber and foam items out of reach (they love chewing them, and swallowed pieces cause blockages).
- Diet. Ferrets are obligate carnivores. They need high-protein, high-fat ferret food or raw diets, never fruit, vegetables, or dog food.
- Vet care. Not every clinic treats ferrets, so find an exotics vet before you bring one home. Budget for vaccinations and, in many countries, neutering.
Do ferrets smell?
A little, yes. Ferrets have a natural musky scent that never fully disappears, even in descented animals. Most owners stop noticing it within weeks. You can keep it mild by washing bedding weekly and cleaning litter trays daily. Ironically, bathing a ferret too often makes the smell worse, because their skin overproduces oils to compensate. Once or twice a year is plenty.
How long do ferrets live?
Most ferrets live 6 to 10 years, with 8 being a common average. That is shorter than a cat or dog, and it is something ferret owners feel deeply. The bond you build over thousands of hours of play and pocket naps is enormous, and the goodbye comes sooner than feels fair. This is actually how ferrets entered my world at the pottery wheel. Should you get one ferret or two?
If your schedule keeps you out of the house most of the day, two is kinder than one. A bonded pair will wrestle, groom, and sleep in a heap together, which takes pressure off you to be the sole source of entertainment. The extra cost is modest compared to the difference it makes to their happiness.

Expect roughly $400 to $1,500 upfront for the ferret, cage, and first vet visit, then $1,000 or more per year for food, litter, and veterinary care.

No. Ferrets are mustelids, related to weasels, otters, and badgers, not to mice or rats.
