Are Ceramic Pet Urns a Good Choice? An Honest Guide from a Potter

A ceramic pet urn can be a suitable choice if you want a personal painted memorial for an indoor place. The important checks are the same as for any urn: enough usable capacity, an appropriate opening and closure, and care that suits where you plan to keep it. Ceramic also needs protection from knocks because it can chip or break.

I’m Tammy, the ceramicist behind Farbe Ceramics. Here is how I would help you decide whether one of our ceramic forms suits your plans.

What can ceramic offer?

A ceramic surface can carry a portrait, individual coat markings, personal words or a design we agree together. The curve of the form is part of that work. A painted portrait on a jar is a different starting point from an animal shaped urn. You can choose the form that feels right, provided its capacity and opening suit the intended use.

The finished painting is an interpretation of your photographs. Brushwork, glaze and firing bring natural variation, so the piece will not be a mechanically exact copy of a photograph or another commission.

How are the forms made?

Our jars are formed on the wheel. Animal shaped forms are molded and finished by hand. We then work on the individual painting and agreed details. These are different ways of making a ceramic form, and I prefer to explain them plainly. You can read the process guide for the stages of a Farbe commission.

How do I know whether the ashes will fit?

Ask your crematory for the actual volume in milliliters or cubic inches. Compare it with the usable capacity of the product and size you choose. If the ashes will remain in a sealed bag, check the bag dimensions and the urn’s opening too. Similar exterior heights do not mean similar interiors.

A keepsake can hold a portion if that is your preference. Please ask me about the specific form if the capacity or opening you need is unclear. Body weight is not a guarantee of fit.

Does every ceramic urn seal in the same way?

No. Check the closure instructions for the actual product. A fitted lid, a removable closure and a permanently sealed arrangement are different things. Do not assume that a ceramic urn is airtight, waterproof or suitable for outdoor use. If you expect to move the ashes later, discuss that before agreeing to a permanent closure.

Where should I keep it?

Choose a stable indoor surface away from edges, direct heat, moisture and places where children or animals could knock it. Support the body when moving it and follow the supplied instructions for cleaning and handling. Avoid lifting a piece by a lid or figurine. A private cabinet is as valid a choice as an open shelf.

What about making time?

Existing forms usually take 6 to 8 weeks after the design is agreed. Custom sizes and fully bespoke work usually take 8 to 10 weeks, with shipping time additional. If you need something immediately, a custom ceramic commission may not meet that date. I’m happy to explain the current timing before you order.
