Before transferring your pet’s ashes, check whether they are in a sealed bag and whether that bag fits through the new urn’s opening. Ask the crematorium to help if you do not want to do the transfer yourself. You do not need to open the bag simply to put it inside another container.
There can be a great deal of feeling attached to this small practical task. You can ask someone to sit with you, arrange professional help or leave it for another day while the ashes remain securely contained.
Start with the crematorium, not the lid
Ask how the current container opens and whether any part has been permanently sealed. Ask about transferring the intact bag, the service they offer and any charge. If the ashes are loose, the bag is damaged or you cannot identify the closure, stop and ask for help. Do not pry apart a ceramic base or cut open unfamiliar packaging.
Check these details before arranging a transfer
- Confirm whether the new urn is intended for all the ashes or only a keepsake portion.
- Ask for the actual ash volume in millilitres or cubic inches.
- Check the new urn’s usable internal capacity and the size of the opening.
- Check how the bag will fit without forcing it against the rim.
- Read the maker’s instructions for the lid or base closure.
External dimensions do not tell you the usable internal space. A sculptural urn may have thick walls or a narrow neck. Ask before ordering if you want the original bag to remain intact.
If you are moving an intact bag yourself
Follow the instructions from the crematorium and urn maker. Choose a clear, stable surface in a quiet room away from children and pets. Keep the identification record beside you. If the intact bag does not fit easily, put it back safely and contact the provider. Do not squeeze it through, trim the bag or continue because you feel you ought to finish.
Should I glue the urn shut?
Ask the maker first. Closure designs vary, and a permanent adhesive can prevent later access or damage a finish. Say whether you may want to scatter, divide or move the ashes later. Do not assume that every ceramic urn should be sealed in the same way.
Choosing a piece that suits the ashes you have
My ceramic portrait urns can be discussed around the practical measurements as well as your pet’s photographs. Please confirm the ash volume before choosing a size. You can read the urn size guide first and leave the design decision until you feel ready.
