Waiting for the ashes can feel like another unfinished goodbye. Contact the practice or crematorium for a specific update: who currently has responsibility, what stage has been completed and when you should next hear from them. The time in a cremation chamber is not the same as the whole return journey.
A short follow up call
- Give your pet’s name, your name and the date of the arrangement.
- Ask whether collection from the practice has taken place.
- Ask who will contact you when the ashes are ready and where collection will be.
- Request a realistic next update, rather than guessing from someone else’s experience.
You could say, “I understand the timing varies. I am finding the uncertainty difficult. Please tell me what has happened so far and when I should call again.” Keep the reply and the contact name together. If the answer does not match your paperwork, ask the provider to explain the difference in writing.
Should I order an urn while I wait?
You can wait. First confirm the returned container and actual ashes volume. A suitable supplied container gives you time to choose a permanent memorial without using the return date as a shopping deadline.
A permanent memorial can wait. If you later want to explore ceramic options, the pet portrait urn page explains one available format. Keeping the existing container is an option too.
