Help rabbits stay cooler with continuous shade, good airflow and fresh water. Check the space as the sun moves, and offer a cooler resting place they can choose. If your rabbit seems weak, distressed or is breathing unusually fast, call your vet immediately.
Prepare the space before it becomes hot
A roof alone does not keep a hutch cool. Check the whole enclosure, including the places where your rabbits rest. Make sure water remains available and move them to a suitable cooler environment if needed.
Offer choices for resting
A shaded tile or a wrapped frozen water bottle can provide another place to rest beside. Keep the surrounding space cool too. Your rabbit should be able to move away, and a cooling object does not replace shade, airflow or checks through the day.
What if I think my rabbit is overheating?
Move them to a cooler place and call your vet urgently. Ask for first aid instructions while arranging help. Do not submerge the rabbit in cold water. Do not assume that an animal staying still is simply enjoying a rest.
Where can I check rabbit specific advice?
The Rabbit Welfare Association and Fund explains summer cooling options. Blue Cross has rabbit hot weather advice. Follow your own vet for health concerns, especially when your rabbit’s normal eating, movement or breathing changes.
