Gold can catch your eye before you have noticed the painted face. That is why its position matters. On a personal memorial, I want the decorative detail to sit comfortably with the animal you recognise, rather than become the whole story.
Choose the role of the gold
Think about whether you want a small accent, a repeated motif or a more visible border. A few stars around a collar create a different balance from a broad gold band. Put the portrait first when deciding how much space each part needs.
Look at a finished example from more than one angle. Metallic surfaces reflect light, so one photograph can make an accent look much stronger or quieter than it feels in person. A short video can sometimes answer that question better than another still image.
Ask about the actual finish
Gold lustre is a ceramic finishing option with its own material instructions and firing requirements. It is not the same as simply choosing a gold colour in a digital preview. Ask which areas can have the finish and how the finished piece should be handled.
The manufacturer Mayco describes gold overglazes as an additional fired decoration on a glazed surface. That is a general material reference, not a specification for every Farbe commission.
At Christmas, a gold detail can feel seasonal without becoming a Christmas design. If you want the memorial to sit in your home throughout the year, choose the motif for its meaning to you and let the surrounding decorations carry the changing season.
